North Country Center for Independence
Volunteering & Community Involvement
True independent living includes friendship, recreation, and service with other people in your community. It's more than just filling your free time. It's about enjoyment, improving yourself, and making a difference in your community. Several of our programs at NCCI rely on volunteers, and there are dozens of other agencies and organizations doing valuable work that may interest you. And even though the North Country lacks many "big city" amenities, there is always plenty to do if you take the time to look.
Mentoring
Provide personal and career advice and support to a person with a disability. We're especially looking for volunteer mentors who have disabilities, and people from a variety of job and career fields. Flexible scheduling and commitment. Some training required. For more information, visit our Mentoring page, or email Michael Sherman, Independent Living Specialist, by clicking this link..
North East Radio Reading Service
Read local newspapers and magazines for broadcast over a special radio frequency to people who can't read print due to visual impairment or other disabilities. Flexible scheduling and commitment. For more information, visit our North East Radio Reading Service, or send an e-mail to Alan Bechard, Program Coordinator.
Long Term Care Ombudsman Program
Visit nursing facilities. Help residents and family members solve problems and improve safety, health, and quality of life. Weekly visits and reporting commitment. 36 hour training course required. For more information, visit our Long Term Care Ombudsman page, or send an e-mail to Alan Bechard, Long Term Care Ombudsman.
Help A Neighbor
We maintain a list of people willing and able to provide help to people with disabilities with everyday tasks like shopping, cleaning, yard work, snow shoveling, etc. If you are interested in helping out in this way, let us know what you are able to do and howe can get in touch with you. Send an e-mail to Mike Gagnier, Assistant Director.
