Support Services

Independent Living Centers deal with a wide range of issues and concerns, but one of the most common and basic things we do is help people with disabilities get the support services they need to either leave institutional care settings like nursing homes and group homes, or avoid having to go in the first place.

For people who value it, being able to live in their own home despite needing help with daily self-care isn't just about safety or the pleasantness of the environment. Many people would prefer to live on their own in a modest apartment with part-time support, than to live in an attractive nursing home staffed with kind, capable, full-time staff. They may be strongly attached to a house they've worked for and lived in for years. They may like being alone and not having to get along with room mates. Some people want the freedom to decide when their meal times will be and when they go to bed or get up in the morning. Others just prefer knowing that they live in a place that is literally theirs ... they have a key to the door, they own their own dishes and sheets, they choose who to live with.

In 1999, the United States Supreme Court in the Olmstead decision ruled that since state and local governments have the capability of providing a full range of in-home services for long term care, it is unjust and discriminatory to tell people they have to go into nursing homes or institutions when they need more care.Whether you are a young person with a disability who wants to move out of your parents' home, an elderly person who needs help now to live on your own, or a family struggling to care for aging parents, there are services that can help maintain independence for people with almost any kind of disability.

Unfortunately, though the services exist, they are often confusing and hard to organize. We at NCCI can help you find out what you might be eligible for, and help you sort out your options so that you can make informed choices. Don't assume that disability means losing control or independence. Talk to us first. You may be surprised at what is possible.
