People who can't read newspapers and magazines due to visual impairment or other disability may qualify for a Radio Reading Service receiver, a specially-tuned radio that plays broadcasts of audio readings of newspapers, magazines, and other copyrighted publications. Local volunteers for the Radio Reading Service read the Press-Republican and other local publications, which are broadcast locally in the mornings and evenings, Monday through Saturday. Other national publications are also broadcast when they are available.
If you need a receiver or want to be a volunteer reader, e-mail Greg Lyman, Program Coordinator, or call him at 518-563-9058 Voice & TTY.
The North East Radio Reading Service is a partnership of the North Country Center for Independence, Mountain Lake PBS, Northeast Public Radio, and the Clinton-Essex-Franklin Library System, with additional financial support from the Lions Clubs in Beekmantown, Chazy, Plattsburgh and Peru, the Plattsburgh Elks Club, Fraternal Lodge #144 F&AM, and the United Way of Clinton and Essex Counties. Thanks also to Mountain Lake PBS, Plattsburgh's public television station, providing space and technical assistance to the Radio Reading Service, and to Northeast Public Radio, the Albany-based public radio station, which provides transmitter and technical assistance to the Radio Reading Service.
