.
At NCCI, we engage in both individual and systems advocacy. We help individuals advocate more effectively for their own needs, and we work to identify issues in our community, state, and country that need to be addressed. Sometimes we speak for people who have difficulty speaking for themselves. At the same time, we aim to teach people how to fight for their own needs, and come together to fight for the needs and aspirations of people with disabilities everywhere.
Individual Advocacy
Individual advocacy occurs when a person is trying to solve a problem or dispute by seeking help, alteration in policies, accommodations, reconsideration of decisions, or improved service from other people or organizations. A tenant may advocate with a landlord for better snow removal on a ramp, or an extra week to pay the rent. A customer may advocate with a business owner to move displays that are blocking wheelchair access. A consumer may advocate with a home care provider to get more hours of service or a change in staff. Everyone advocates for themselves from time to time. People with disabilities may need to advocate for themselves more often. Self-advocacy is a vital skill to learn for independent living.
If your or someone you know is in a nursing home and has any kind of problem they aren't sure how to solve, call our Clinton County Long Term Care Ombudsman program at 518-562-1732. Visit our Long Term Care Ombudsman page to learn more about how the Ombudsman program can help you, and how you might help us by becoming an Ombudsman.
We can help parents of kids with disabilities advocate for their childrens' education needs. You can also contact the Parent to Parent Adirondack Office.

Systems Advocacy
Systems advocacy addresses policies and practices of organizations that affect many people, not just one. Systems advocacy on disability issues can be aimed at large employers, major retailers and service providers, and local, state, or federal government departments. Systems advocacy can address policies, practices, accessibility, regulations, or laws ... any possible changes that have the potential to improve conditions for a wide variety of people with disabilities. For more information on State and National disability issues, contact Robert Poulin, Systems Advocate.
NCCI's Issues & Advocacy Blog has the latest information on disability issues. Visit often, and join the discussion! And don't forget to visit our Voter Registration page.
