Social Security Work Incentives

People with disabilities often wonder what will happen to benefits like Disability, SSI, Medicaid and Medicare if they take a paid job. Some won't even consider getting a job because they think they will be worse off if they do. The truth is that with Social Security Work Incentives, there is usually a way for anyone with a disability to earn money for their work, while keeping some or all of the benefits they need to maintain their independence. Before you take a job, talk with our Community Work Incentives Coordinator.
  • Sandra Soper, Community Work Incentives Coordinator, 518-873-2540.
Peer Mentoring

Our community is full of people with lifetimes of experience to share with you. Would you like to meet with another person with a disability who has achieved success in their job or career? We can match you with a Volunteer Peer Mentor. Would it help to visit different jobs to see what they are like? We can find a Career Mentor who will show you the ropes of his or her job. Call NCCI at 518-563-9058 and ask for a Peer Mentor. If you're interested in becoming a Peer Mentor or Career Mentor, visit our Volunteer Opportunities page for more information.

Independent Living Academy

Sometimes, job skills just aren't enough. The rest of your life affects your ability to succeed at work. Brush up you independent living skills by participating in Independent Living Academy, a ten-week course for people with disabilities. You will learn a lot, and meet others who can help support you as you pursue your goals.

Disability Rights Laws

Do you have to tell an employer about your disability when you interview for a job? How do you ask for accommodations on the job without risking your job? What should you do if your work place isn't accessible? We have a library of information on disability rights laws like the Americans with Disabilities Act. Find out about your rights as a job applicant or employee with a disability.
